This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am an Art teacher at an inner city, Title 1, Middle and High School. I teach grades 6, 8,and 9 and strive to help my students see the possibilities that Art can offer them and their community. We explore a variety of physical mediums and also look at how Art is used by different people from different regions of the world. We discuss how people use Art to express their experience. My intent is to provide my students with the opportunity to express themselves, and the understanding that this expression is valuable. I am also establishing connections with working artists in our city so that my students can learn that Art can be a career choice.
My students would like to make large scale sculptures. They will be making life size human forms. They will start with the wire armature and add on with the plaster wrap. The sculptures will be painted and then put on display in our school and hopefully a local art exhibit.
Your assistance will provide my students with the opportunity to pursue their interests and give them the ability to expresses themselves in a positive way. My students need this in their lives, as they are surrounded by challenging circumstances and negativity and despair is commonplace. They need hope and positive experiences. These are some of the things I believe they can get out of creating art and your contribution would have a tremendous impact.
