This is your chance to send children of poverty on a virtual field trip they will never forget. I teach in a general education classroom of 23 students. We service high risk students with a 40% free and reduced lunch program. I am a second grade teacher at a wonderful school located 15 miles from our state's capital.
Servicing children in a school of 40% poverty creates many difficulties. Our students lack hands on and real life experiences. My school supply money was put towards buying basic school supplies for the children. I would like these items I am requesting to fill my room with imagination & creativity while we study our solar system unit.
For two weeks our classroom will be going on an imaginary journey through space. We will be exploring the phases of the moon, the planets, and constellations. By providing an inflatable solar system we can learn the order of the planets and the size of them. We will watch our ceiling closely as our light up solar system explains how our solar system works. We will then act out what we know on our felt board with our felt models. My students will walk away from this learning experience with a life long memory of activities and great knowledge of our solar system. This knowledge will allow us to create a classroom project that will show the school everything we have learned!
You will make it possible for my students to have a hands on experience during our solar system studies. By doing this, you will have created enthusiastic students who are no longer doing pencil and paper work, but are excited about learning. This excitement will put these students on the right path to a successful career in education.
