I teach in a self-contained special education classroom in New York. My students are ages 5 and 6 and at both the Kindergarten and 1st grade level. All of the students in my class are on the autistic spectrum and vary greatly in terms of ability.
Our school serves only special education students who need a restrictive environment in order to succeed. Our students typically fall into three categories: those with autism, those with emotional disturbances, and those with mental retardation. Most of the students at our school qualify for the free lunch program and our school is devastated with budget cuts and lack of funding. Therefore, it's difficult to get necessary materials for our students.
I'm just beginning my career as a teacher and am lacking the necessary materials for my students. We're really limited in what materials the school is able to purchase, which leaves our classroom without the activities and learning tools that our students should be entitled to.
My students love to "play", and I think puppets would be a great way to "play", yet still learn manners and social skills and norms.
Math manipulatives can also be used as toys, and students can be practicing their math skills without even noticing.
My students have a TON of energy and love to play outside. Unfortunately, we only have a concrete "courtyard" without any playground equipment. A large parachute would be a great way for my students to play outside and also work on their social skills and peer interaction.
These resources would ensure that my students got what they deserved: a well equipped classroom in which they can play and learn simultaneously. I sincerely wish that I could purchase everything I need for my classroom by myself, but it simply isn't possible. Please consider helping my students realize their full potential by contributing to our classroom resources. Thank you SO much!!!
