The school I work at services only special education children. The children have a wide variety of needs that prevent them from attending a general education school. I'm teaching first grade children with mild to severe autism, which is amazingly rewarding. Our school is in a high-needs area and many of our students are living in impoverished conditions. They are incredibly delightful kids with all the potential in the world if given the tools to succeed.
As a new teacher, I'm basically building my classroom from scratch. The items that I'm requesting (bean bag and physio-ball) are items that students are obviously unable to supply the classroom with and are things that will be able to be used by students year after year after year. I have seen these materials being used in other classrooms for students with autism and their benefit is amazing.
Students with autism are very sensory people, meaning that their bodies feel things differently. A bean bag chair would help them to feel more comfortable when reading in our classroom library and would also give them a "safe place" when they start to feel anxious or frustrated. They would be able to calm themselves down and learn appropriate coping strategies to empower them to control their emotions. Physio-balls are similar to exercise balls and allow the student to bounce in place and exert energy in a non-harmful way. Students can relax on it or simply use it to play and have fun.
Your help will ensure that my students are given every opportunity to have the most well-quipped classroom possible. I've seen how students with autism benefit from these two pieces of equipment and know how valuable they would be to us this year, and also to the future students that I will have. We appreciate any sort of help you can give us! Thank you so much!
