Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach 10th grade English at an inner city High School in DC. We have a rich history of success but over the past few years the school has been slated a failing school under the No Child Left Behind act.

Most my students read below grade level. The school is under funded and has very few (and very old) literature books.

I think it's very important to find high interest books for my students to read. I know they will love the talking head in "Lord of the Flies" and the adventure of the characters. They will be shocked and disturbed by the behavior of the young boys stranded on a tropical island. My students just may learn to love reading.

Thanks in advance for improving my students education. They, like me, will remember this book for the rest of their lives . . .because of you.
