This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach math in the Freshman Academy in our high school. Many of our students are economically disadvantaged and lack the experiences that foster creativity and imagination.
Our leadership team is addressing this issue by blocking daily time for "silent sustained reading" for students and staff. One of our greatest challenges in implementing this important goal is limited resources.
The resources needed are simple--books that interest teenagers. Our students will greatly benefit from reading books that capture their interest and inspire them to read more.
The cost of these books is just a small price to pay for the learning that will occur for my students. The average cost of a teen book is $8; however, the average cost of enhanced reading skills is priceless!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
