A Battle Without Weapons? Competition Breeds Readers

My students need 2 copies of 15 book titles which are the Sunshine State Reading Books for 2008-2009 school year.

You could impact the lives of our future generation! I teach Language Arts to 2 classes of very diverse 4th grade students, some of which are ESOL students (English is their second language). My students have varying learning abilities and to help one another, we work together in partnerships and small groups. To motivate our learners and promote literacy, our school has a "Battle of the Books" for students in 3rd through 5th grades. There are 15 books which have to be read and mastered by my 4th grade team. My 4th grade team will compete against other teams in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This is a positive, highly motivating reading event that takes place all year. Students are reading, studying each book in depth, until the end of the year when the battle takes place. My school started this last year, and the students were "on fire" with reading these highly motivating, award-winning books.

How can we battle when we are not equipped? We have no books to read and prepare for the battle! I have two classrooms full of highly motivated students who are ready to dive into this wonderful literature, but our school has no money due to the budget cuts. As you might have heard, schools are under an extreme budget cut, and there is no money for supplies, books, and the essentials we need to educate children. I have literally spent well over a thousand dollars of my own money to prepare my classroom with needed supplies. Teachers in our school district are reaching out to the public imploring help from whoever will offer it. We are in a dire situation, one I have not seen in my entire 24 years of teaching.

I am requesting 2 sets of these 15 Sunshine State books, so students can partner read and help one another with language barriers and comprehension. As my learners read and master these books, they become better readers, have more experiences to draw from, and become empowered as their self-esteem increases and their confidence.

Our students deserve to have quality literature to read. Please help us. You will be making a difference in many students' lives. Your kindness and your contribution will have a chain reaction. My students will grow up and be able to "pay it forward".
