Can you imagine how difficult it would be to deliver a PowerPoint slideshow presentation without an LCD projector? That's the situation my students are in, and we would greatly appreciate any donations to help us get to our goal of purchasing a classroom LCD projector In a nutshell, I am a second-year Teach for America corps member who teaches students from high-needs areas at an urban public high school in Washington, D.C. Many of my incoming students are several grades behind in reading, public speaking, and writing skills. Since many of my students are highly visual learners, I was not surprised when they made dramatic gains on last year's tests and quizzes after I began using an LCD projector during my lessons. By the end of the year, my students met our classroom goal and achieved an average of over 80% mastery on AP-based standards and objectives. Unfortunately, my school is short on technological resources, and I will no longer have access to a working LCD projector. Nevertheless, I want to empower incoming students to tap into their visual learning styles and enrich their content knowledge about global issues by becoming modern-day "muckrakers," or photo journalists who take pictures of things around them that encapsulate social problems (drugs, homelessness, racism, etc.) that afflict D.C. as well as other parts of the world. At the end of the project, my students will use an LCD projector to display their photographs in a PowerPoint slideshow, discuss what they learned about a particular social problem, and pitch potential policy proposals that they believe could address it. By donating to help us purchase this LCD projector, you can help engage my students in a challenging project and AP curriculum that will enhance their knowledge about public policy and global affairs.
