Who doesn't remember the W.C. Williams poem about the red wheelbarrow and those awful white chickens? Love That Dog is a wonderful book of poetry written in free verse that my eleventh graders will love. In my American Literature class, we study the Williams' poem along with the poetry of Robert Frost and Walter Dean Myers, all of which are referenced in Love That Dog. I teach in a school that is motivated to get young people to read and enjoy it!
My students hate everything about poetry, and the protagonist in the book echoes everything my students say. However, by the end of the novel, Jack, the protagonist becomes a poet himself. My kids become involved in Jack's life and grow as writers themselves.
I need 30 copies of Love That Dog, a class set. As we begin Modernist poetry, we will read the novel. Students will identify with the main character and join him as he discovers of the joy of poetry, gaining an appreciation themselves.
