Don't great students deserve to be exposed to great literature?
I teach 9th and 10th grade Literature at a high school in New York City. Our school has a diverse group of students, many who come from high-needs households and Junior High Schools. Many of them have never had the opportunity or means to get their hands on good literature.
Due to budget cuts in NYC public schools, we find ourselves looking for help in purchasing new novels for use in our literature classrooms. I know that if I get the chance to teach this powerful text, it will change the way students look at reading, I just need the chance to do so! There is no joy and inspiration in digging through a book room to choose what you teach--the kids deserve to be taught the right book for them.
I am asking for 90 copies of Speak, a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. This will be used as a class text that all our 9th and 10th grade students would read. It is a powerful novel about a young woman who is alienated from her peers after reporting a rape to the authorities. This novel teaches young men and women what it means to stand up for what is right. We are planning a fantastic curriculum to teach this novel, now all we need are the books!
If you are able to help fund this project, you are helping to promote a love of reading in today's youth. If kids read books that matter, they take action and they are empowered to continue reading. There is no better use for your money than in providing books to students who need them the most. The books will be taken good care of and used for other students in years to come. Your support is so appreciated and the 9th and 10th graders from our community can't wait to thank you for your support!
