I teach 3rd graders in a low socio-economic community who are eager to learn, but face many challenges in their every day lives. They come to school expecting a safe place in which they can learn and I try to provide that for them.

Last year I taught a science unit on fish and the kids were thoroughly engaged and excited about the materials. We have posters and a few books about fish and we took a field trip to the aquarium (that the children loved). However, we really needed more non-fiction science books to support and enhance our learning.

Therefore, I am requesting several different science picture books about fish for my new class. My students will use these books to research and learn more about fish as part of our science unit. My students LOVE to do research. They create elaborate drawings and locate interesting and unique information when given the opportunity to do so on their own. This type of discovery and learning is much more authentic and will stay with a student longer than a worksheet or a lecture from a teacher. With these science books my students will be able to complete their own self directed research and participate in groups where they share the information they have learned with other students in the class.

Your donation will ensure that my eager learners are challenged and engaged in a science unit that will not only prepare them for the state test and the next grade, but will provide them with a learning experience that will create lifetime lovers of learning.
