I teach math to 88 third grade students. We are a high poverty school and many of my students are also English Language Learners.
With almost any child, especially those still learning English, manipulatives are the best way to teach new concepts. It allows students to construct their own models and see how numbers and other math concepts work.
The Hands-On Standards series is a great approach to teaching math. It covers all of the standards that my students are required to learn for the state test, but without a lot of "skill and drill." The manipulatives would give my students another way to learn new skills and vocabulary. Even the struggling students can feel success if a foundation is laid using manipulatives.
By funding this project, my students will have access to many great manipulatives that will reinforce concepts needed for success in school and in life.
