How often do you use math in everyday life? I am a third grade math and science teacher of a very diverse group of students including gifted students, ESL students (English as a Second Language), and ESE students (Exceptional Student Education) at a school in Florida.
It is a well known fact that everyone has different learning styles. Every teacher faces the challenge of trying to find ways to "reach" every student. As a math teacher, I have found that there are some students who just don't understand numbers and math concepts in the traditional way. Even through the use of manipulatives and "hands on" activities, they still struggle. Often times, these are the students who excel in reading. Why not combine math and reading? I have found that presenting mathematical concepts through stories is a wonderful way to help these students make the connections needed in order to be successful in math.
I have compiled a list of math story books and one set of math games to help my students "make the connection" in order to be successful mathematicians.
Your support will help many students who just don't "get it" to feel successful and understand math, this year and for many years to come. After all, understanding math is not an option. We use it everyday of our lives: telling time, ordering supplies, grocery shopping, paying for things, cooking...the list goes on and on. By donating to this project, you can directly affect the future of many students in my class. Thank you for taking time to read about this project.
