"What one reads becomes part of what one sees and feels." Ralph Ellison
I teach second grade in a public school nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. It is a picturesque setting, and my students come from working-class families. My students are hard-working and enjoy learning. Our community is rapidly growing, and our district struggles to "keep up" with the tremendous growth. Many of the district funds are earmarked to pay for additional classrooms at schools so students do not have to attend classes in mobile classrooms. This lack of funding leaves teachers with the bare minimum for supplies.
Although I have accumulated various hands-on math manipulatives over the years, I do not have literature to connect our reading and math standards. I strongly believe that math instruction should be linked and integrated with other subjects, especially reading. I also believe that students need to have positive experiences with books and should view them as both recreational and educational in all curriculum areas.
A math library is a tool that would benefit my students. The math library would include math-skill-building books that reinforce essential concepts at a second-grade level. These books will develop the students' math skills by using engaging examples that bring math to life.
I believe my children would greatly benefit from having a math library in my classroom. As a teacher, I would be able to deliver math instruction via literature. As a donor, you can increase my students' knowledge, interest, and excitement about both math and literature this year and for years to come.
