This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Want to help kids learn to love to read?
I teach struggling readers in grades kindergarten through 3rd grade. These students are all behind their grade level in reading. My campus has mostly low-income students who don't have access to lots of new books and games.
My students don't want to read at home. They love to play games though, so I would love for them to have backpacks filled with books and activities! These activities build on the book and encourage children to read. My students love taking home fun games, so this would motivate them to read. It also brings the family together by allowing them to all participate.
My classroom needs 16 backpacks with books and related activities to get this program started. Each student will be allowed to take the bag to their house to read at night.
Your help will bring books into many children's lives. It will open their eyes to the joys of reading!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
