My Students

My students need opportunities to experience other cultures outside of the classroom. Going to see Legend Has It will allow my students to connect academic learning with creativity and visual representations of different types of legends.

My students are a culturally diverse group.

Almost 30% are of Hispanic or Asian descent. It’s incredibly important for them to understand, as well as celebrate, the similarities and differences that exist within our school community. My students enjoy dramatic arts and will benefit from captivating performances that depict cultural traditions.

My Project

We are currently studying Native American legends by reading The Song of Hiawatha and The Birchbark House. After a close reading of these texts over many weeks, students will then be able to see a live performance of various legends from different cultures. Through the Legend Has It BAM school-time performance, our students will also receive an in-school teaching artist program. The teaching artist will give students background information about the legends and will facilitate a pre-performance activity.

The Legend Has It school-time performance will make a difference in our school community because we have limited resources for arts programming, particularly professional performances that require traveling from school to attend.

This performance and teaching artist activity will bring the legends unit to life!
