I teach 20 eager, 1st grade students. As a teacher I would like to introduce them to various genres of books.

A listening center is a tool to introduce various literature. The students gain independence, vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension skills through the likes of stories and music. Currently we do not have a listening center where few students could listen while I am working with a small group on another skill.

My solution is to create a listening center in my classroom. A mobile listening center would give me the space I need to hold a library of read aloud books. The children could use this center each day as a literacy center. Students could work in small groups as they read and listen to the same literature as I work with other groups. I plan to level my students with literature by their needs. All children enjoy listening to books on CD/Tapes as well as being read to. This would give them the variation and skills in working with a group as they listen. They will also learn communication and social skills through working together.

You will make it possible for my 20 students to have a listening center in the classroom where a group could work together and not interrupt others while they are listening to the stories or songs. It is extremely important to have so that while they listen to the stories using their headsets, others are not disturbed so the rest of the class could work on writing, retelling a story they just heard and reflecting.
