Teenagers and Grandparents playing chess together! What could be better! At our school, we are trying to build bridges between our at-risk teenagers through an after-school program. Two days a week, our students meet and play chess in order to learn about sportsmanship, rules, respect and skills of chess. Our school is also dedicated to having more adult connections, so chess is one of our answers.

Many of our students come from poor homes (54% free and reduced lunch) and do not have many interactions with adults in friendly, competitive games. We started playing after school and now have 5 chess boards but over 60 students wanting to play. We also have some Senior Citizens who have expressed interest in having some games where students and our local retirees compete against each other. We really need boards, timers, and charts to organize the games. We are excited about the possibilities of two different age groups working together while playing games.

We desperately need additional chess boards/games. We also need timers, but did not see them on the Donors Choose website. We would also like the charts to monitor games and to ensure that everyone has the chance to play each other. The certificates would be nice to give at the end of the year party.

Someone once said it takes a "village to raise a child" - well we believe that our school is a safe place and that our students will have positive interactions with our local Senior Citizens. Both age groups benefit from this interaction. Mutual respect is expanded and learned and everyone improves their love and passion for this game. Additionally, kids become smarter by playing such a game entrenched in thinking! Thank you for supporting our kids!
