"Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important." Bill Gates
I am a technology teacher in an inner city school where most of my elementary and middle school students have a cell phone to play on, but they don't have access to a computer at home.
I need to teach them the basic skills on a computer in order to succeed in their future classes, but it is hard to keep them focused on work and projects when all they really want to do in check their social media accounts and play games. In order to keep their attention, I need to keep my skills polished and know how to make learning about the technical parts of technology fun.
In order to do that, I submerse myself in professional development. I am constantly watching videos on PD360, taking workshops provided by our district, and even enrolled in a Master's of Technology program. Our science department for the district set aside grant money to fund teachers willing to provide an after school STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) program for students. I have found that in all the craziness of life, testing, and trying to keep students focused, I truly love working with students after school using technology in a fun way. I really want to incorporate photography and video editing into the program, but I need to become better at it myself first. With a new camera bundle and laptop I can work on my own skills first, learn about different editing programs, and then teach the students how to make their own video productions. I plan to study online video editing courses such as the ones found on Udemy.com and Filmconnection.com.
