My students have shown lots of interest in 3D art. With many students in a classroom and a traveling art program, space is limited. Mosaic making will foster their 3D creative skills while bringing their masterpieces outside of the classroom and into the new outdoor garden space at our school!
Our school's new vegetable garden is growing fast and so are the skills of our young artists.
Our new art program is flourishing and we would love to enhance our new garden space with mosaic sculptures and steps while learning about art, science, & nutrition. Help us put all the pieces together!
Our school introduced it's first art program just two years ago, and the artists are learning quickly. We are located in a culturally diverse community in the Northwest side of Chicago. I am a traveling art teacher in a school with over 1,000 students across 3 different buildings. The vegetable and plant garden is a space that brings all students together across our large campus. My students are being exposed to many different styles of art and they have shown much talent and progress.
My Project
My 4th-6th grade students will collaborate with science to maintain the garden plants while also learning about nutrition and life cycles. They will also integrate math skills to design, measure, and piece together mosaics while also learning about color theory. During art, students will be able to further learn about mosaic artists such as Antoni Gaudí, who uses mosaic art inspired by nature.
Students will design and grout the mosaics, use recycled glass sculptures, create signs, and perhaps even mosaic a bird water bath and tree trunk stumps to sit and read on.
These materials will help students connect art with other science, health, and math topics they are learning.
It will allow the artists to move out of the classroom to have a hands-on (and messy!) creative experience to form sculptural pieces that are long lasting and beautiful. Students will be able to share their mosaic art and feel a sense of pride. It will enhance and flourish our new garden into a lively and inspiring place to visit by all members of our growing community!
