My Students
A picture is worth a thousand words. Graphics tell a story about a data set. In an instant, a reader can visualize the shape, center and spread of a data set. My students are learning the power of graphical displays of data this year in our statistics classes.
In our Harlem public school, my students are learning data analysis skills in statistics class.
We are learning how to properly collect data and then how to properly display the data in a meaningful way. We are learning how to analyze the data to determine what story the data tells us.
My Project
The individual graph paper and mechanical pencils will allow students to work independently to create graphical displays of data sets that they collect. The large easel-size graphing post-it paper and the sharpie markers will allow students to work together and create collective graphics to display in the classroom. The groups will communicate the story of their graphics display to the rest of the class.
The smiley face pads will serve as a reward to be earned by students who do an exemplary job.
Our world is data driven.
With the advent of computers, our society has the ability to gather large amounts of data. It is up to people to analyze all this data and make sense of it. Our young people need to be instructed in how to do this. Virtually every profession in today's world requires the analysis of data. Today's students need to begin this type of data-driven thinking early in their education. Please help me to prepare these young people to understand data-driven thinking.
