This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Play and learn at the same time? Absolutely! First graders need time to actively choose their learning activities. I teach at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School in San Francisco's Mission District. Our students are primarily low-income, at risk students who are mostly English Learners.
So much of our day is regimented by California State Standards, and there is little room to wiggle. However, it is so important for young students to have the opportunity to take control of their learning by helping to choose some of the activities.
Several times a week, my students participate in a learning block called "Plan, Do and Review." These are essentially free-choice learning stations. Students identify what they would like to do for the day, engage in that activity, and then have a closure opportunity to reflect and absorb the learning that was done during the time block. However, due to budget constraints, I am always struggling to provide a variety of activities for "Plan, Do and Review."
Your sponsorship will help me provide a whole new set of puzzles, a set of bingo games and a variety of other phonics games for our classroom.
By supporting this proposal, you will help me show my students the respect they deserve by allowing them to control their own learning.
