This year, our school will be using a new program with 9th and 10th graders for Algebra and Geometry. The meaningful math program is a very student centered program, which let students learn by having them discover things through different activities and conducting self-designed experiments.
I am very excited to know that I will be teaching about 150, 9th and 10th students this year.
What will make it more exciting is that some of them are students from my 7th grade classes two years back, and we will be spending another exciting year together again. It is a group of very active students and I think the new math program with suit them very well.
Because of the adoption of a new math program in our school, teachers such as myself are going to be adopting a new teaching style. These will allows the students to be the leaders and presenters in the classroom. They will be using chart papers almost every day to present their work. After purchasing about 25 sets of markers, I realize that because of the large population of the classes and the demand for materials such as chart papers, pattern blocks, pipe stems, I can not possible afford to get everything myself. The classroom will have 9 groups per class period, and I would have 5 periods per day, so , we will be using minimum of 45 sheets of chart paper everyday. The pattern blocks are for discovering angle relationship in Geometry, and pipe stems are for discovering triangle inequalities in Geometry. Lastly, the trays are for storing different teaching materials for each group so that students can use in class.
Having discovery lessons is very new to most of my students.
It is certainly very new to us teachers in the building. We cannot do it without the material requested for the new program, and we were told that the school is not going to order the teaching kits that should accompany the textbook. With only days till the beginning of the year, we really need to get material as soon as possible. I was only informed as part of the program last week, and I am doing my best to get it ready to start
