Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
No internet! No iPod! No iPad! No Nook! That is the reality for many of the children in my classroom.
I am a fourth grade teacher in an Integrated Co-teaching Classroom in upper Manhattan.
My students are a mix of regular education students and students with special needs. The odds are stacked against them: many speak English as a second language and have families that struggle to make do with poverty level income. These are some of the challenges that my students face.
My Project
1:1 technology (a laptop for each student) allows teachers to differentiate both in terms of how they teach and how the students are able to demonstrate their learning. It is my goal to create a 1:1 classroom for my children. I have already found success with computer based programs such as Accelerated Reader (we have achieved the highest level,Master Class, five years in a row) and IXL, a math program. I have seen students that struggle to put pencil to paper become so engaged that they spend literally an hour solving math problems on a computer. Children that have difficulty focusing on a teacher directed lesson become fully engaged when they can use an interactive app or a website that uses adaptive technology to meet each student at his or her level. Unfortunately, in my school computer access is severely limited. It is my goal to remedy that. These Chromebooks will help me provide my students with technology to practice, review, research and learn at their own pace.
In any private school in this country all the students have technology of one form or another at their fingertips at any time.
It is my goal to level the playing field for my students, in school, at least. Please help me in my effort to become a 1:1 classroom. My kids deserve an equal opportunity.
