Telling a story with artistic expressions is a vital part of enhancing the "hands-on" experience within the classroom. Students crave feeling the clay, working with it and developing it, to finalize custom pottery pieces. In our art studio, we imagine, design, & build self-esteem using creativity.
My students are ultra-talented and desire pushing forward and experiencing new things.
We are located in the Bronx, New York where poverty is rampant. Fortunately, I have developed an art studio to the best of my ability. However, we need help. It's tough with funding and I am hoping to give my students the enrichment they crave within the arts. They have blossomed into young, motivated artists who are seeking to try ceramics. We have studied various artists and visited museums. We're ready to jump in and smell the clay, get our hands dirty, and create with our soul.
My students are friendly, helpful, and most of all, respectful. I will do anything to help and make their experiences ones to remember. I treasure them all and want to see their faces light up when an opportunity like this can possibly come true.
My school is rated as a top school within the N.Y.C. system where the kids really try their hardest in the academics. We are trying to balance this with the arts.
My Project
Within the art studio, my students will be using the requested materials and tools inside our ceramics course. We are just starting out and have been granted a wonderful opportunity for the students to build with their hands. All students will be creating pieces with clay, solving problems to design and produce specific measurements needed per project.
An example would be creating a jewelry box. Students will need to roll out slabs of clay, measure a base, top, and walls. Students will learn the art of working with clay and hand-building to craft a subject.
The items include sponges, tools, rollers, and design presses for the students to use. The tools are vital for the students as they will really learn how to shape and design their clay pieces. The tools also create a foot or base below their creations which will help finalize the pieces. Sponges will be used to smooth out the bottoms and all areas of the clay while the rollers and presses help to begin during each project.
The environment of the school is thriving with positives, however, due to the surrounding atmosphere and being a school in need concerning funding, we lack in providing some resources that could make the experiences of the students a little better.
These tools requested for the arts can bring about a whole new experience for my students. A little help with this will ensure that they receive these tools to help design the pottery pieces they create, improving all aspects of the classroom.
