This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I currently teach kindergarten in a Chicago Public School, located in a very low-income neighborhood. There is virtually no money available to teachers for educational materials.
Like the public service campaign from the 70's used to say, "Reading is Fundamental!" Without a solid foundation, my kindergarten students will spend the rest of their educational career struggling to read. The best way to learn to read is just to read! I want my students to discover that books are not the only things they can enjoy reading.
Just the way adults read the newspaper daily in order to stay current on local and world events, I want my students to be able to read for information. They already love reading and being read to for entertainment, now I want to expand their horizons. I would love to be able to subscribe to a weekly magazine that I can share with my students, and teach them how to read for information as well as entertainment.
By funding this proposal, you will provide an invaluable opportunity to my students to learn about the world around them, outside of their own neighborhood. Sadly, many of them never experience anything outside of the neighborhood where they live. Take a moment right now to open up the world to a 5 year-old!
