This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school is located in a very low-income area on Chicago's southside. There is very little money available for educational supplies.
I currently teach Kindergarten. As you may well remember from your own Kindergarten days, much of the day was spent sitting together in a circle on the carpet. Sadly, our classroom does not have a carpet to facilitate "circle time" or "story time."
I would like to be able to add a carpet to our room where we can sit as a class, each child in their own space, and engage in learning, sharing, storytelling, singing, and so on.
Think back to when you were 5 years old. Or, perhaps you are the parent of a 5 year-old child. Do you remember how difficult it was to stay seated in a hard, little chair for extended periods of time? Doesn't your child prefer to sit on the floor to play games, or read books? So do my students!
The carpet I have selected is designed to help each student recognize and stay within their own space. The design of this carpet also lends itself to being used for shape and color recognition games and activities.
You can make a difference in the style of learning that happens in our class by simply choosing to fund our carpet. Thank you for your time and consideration.
