Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Help us become authors and illustrators! My students love to read, but it is time they become an author and illustrator themselves! This project helps students understand the roles of authors and illustrators, all while learning about Common Core reading and writing standards too!
I am a teacher of a wonderful, curious group of second graders.
They are from low-income homes (100% receive free lunch) and most of them are second language learners. I want to give my students as many opportunities as I can to learn academic skills using art and literature. My students love to be involved, interactive learners! Their favorite activities include hands-on projects that encompass art, creative writing, and innovation! I am planning to conduct an author study on Patricia Polacco. We also will study how Patricia Polacco uses art to make her stories and characters so real and genuine.
My Project
My students are going to research in collaborative groups the facts about her and why she became an author and the illustrator. We are going to use her literature and beautiful illustrations to mimic her talented writing and art traits. We are also going to use her literature to study characters, setting, and events. Graphic organizers will be used to compare and contrast Polacco's books. While studying and researching an author and being able to have her literature in their hands, my students will have a better understanding of great characters, descriptive settings, and exciting events. These books will help them become better readers and writers. The availability of Polacco's books will bring such a fusion of literacy, art, and social studies. Add the book bins filled with books of other wonderful authors and illustrators to the mix, and the possibilities for preparing my students for Common Core standards seem endless.
The activities I have planned with these books are aligned with the Common Core Standards.
If my students are going to learn good reading strategies, they must have good literature in their hands. By purchasing these books for my classroom as well as book bins where my students can keep their sets of great books, you are helping to fuel a child's love for reading and art. Let's prepare my students better to Common Core with meaningful projects requiring collaboration, critical thinking, and art.
