I'm a Special Education teacher at a high school in the South Bronx. Like any school we face a serious problem with students who read below their grade level, and with some of the students I work closely with this is especially true. At the end of last year I spoke with one of those students and we made a deal for this school year- if she promised to try to read all of the Harry Potter books with me this school year then I would buy the books for her as we went. When school began a month ago it didn't take long for word of this deal to spread, and suddenly I was swarmed with other students who wanted to be involved in reading with us.
Students begging to read? What could be wrong with that?
Barely half of the students who want to be part of our reading circle own the Harry Potter books. I simply don't have the resources to buy the books we need for this. That's where your help comes in.
There are currently four teachers (myself included) waiting to start this program. We're going to split the kids into four groups, "sorted" into the Houses at Hogwarts (and behind the scenes comprised of weak readers with strong readers). We'll meet once a week to read and then discuss the books, and each group will look at what they've read through the eyes of the House they belong to. Besides the reading and vocabulary skills being developed, we'll be engaging the students' imaginations and helping to foster a community of readers across four grade levels.
We need to create a small library of the Harry Potter books to keep at the school for those who don't yet own them. The funds requested will allow us to purchase multiple paperback copies of each book in the series.
In our world of video games, cell phones, instant messaging, and iPods, it's difficult to get teens to sit down and read. To have a large, diverse group excited about a reading circle is a magical thing indeed. Your donations can help bring enchantment to their lives.
