Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
For many of us growing up, Language Arts Literacy was simply a subject in school. We dedicated time for it everyday because it was a requirement, not because it was an interest of ours. Although we all learned to read, we did not necessarily acquire a deep understanding of what it meant to be a strong reader until probably much later in life(if ever). Many have never come to know the joy that reading a book can bring. I would like to bring the joy of reading to my students. By teaching them to love books now, perhaps they can become readers for life.
I currently teach in an Abbott school district in central New Jersey. I teach a class of 25 enthusiastic and impressionable bilingual first graders. Most of the students come from poor families and cannot afford very much, including books. This being the case, many of my students have not had much exposure to literature or to the act of reading. Hopefully, in my classroom, this will change!
I believe that exposing children to literature at an early age can have a tremendous impact on their future as readers. The presentation of books and the act of reading can play a huge role on attitudes towards reading. Reading is not only a skill that will help children succeed in all areas of life, it is an activity that can spark a child's imagination and creativity. The major goal of this project is to help children improve their reading skills and to show that reading is an activity with which they can participate, not because the teacher wants them to, but because it is an enjoyable and beneficial experience. For this reason, I would like to create a space for a classroom library that is inviting, safe and fun for children to take the first steps to becoming lifelong readers.
Creating the appropriate environment will require some simple materials. I will need a carpet on which students can gather to read, a storage/display shelf for Big Books (with a marker board), and a subscription to Time magazine for first grade (to ensure various reading material).
Please help me to bring the joy of reading to these early readers. By helping these students enjoy their early reading experiences we can make a difference that can last a lifetime!
