I teach 4th grade in a rural town in northwestern Montana. One of the biggest challenges I face with this age group is getting them to read for the joy of reading. At this level, we really push kids into reading chapter books. This can be very daunting for the kids, but especially, it seems, for the boys. I want to provide an area where the kids can get down and comfortable with a book. I don't want it to be a "chore", but rather a fun and relaxing experience. I want to create a "reading atmosphere" that will get the kids to want to read, even when it isn't required. Right now, I have some great bean bags and pillows for the kids to use, but they must lay on the cold, tile floor. By providing a rug for the area, you are helping aid my students in learning to enjoy reading. You will provide them a place where they won't get dirty or cold while they read.
