A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Remember your first play? Remember that drama class from elementary school where you first learned to act on a stage and say lines? My students are great kids, with parents who work hard, and who want to improve their speaking and writing skills. They want engagement and want to act in plays!
My students are a very diverse bunch, ranging from kindergarten to third grade, from countries as diverse as Haiti, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador, and Jamaica.
They attend a large urban elementary school with an emphasis on high achievement in reading, writing, and math. The school also emphasizes the arts, and I am one of three full-time arts teachers. They are great kids, with active minds. Many are learning English for the first time, and others are still practicing their speaking skills.
My school wants to provide for the whole child, including drama and theater. The students love to come to my classroom (the stage!) and love to try and act out scripts that challenge and amaze them.
My Project
If I am able to obtain my needed resources for the drama classroom, I will be able to expose my students to the wide world of theater, drama, and performance. We are located in New York, yet often feel far away in terms of supplies and support. My students, with these resources, will be able to experience and learn theater in a real and meaningful way with hands-on activities that stimulate their cognitive, social, emotional, and aesthetic growth as young learners. I will be able to give enough materials to every student in the class, and not have to share scarce materials amongst large classes of students. Students will be able to concentrate better with their own individual materials. With a healthy selection of readers' theater, early childhood literature, and age-appropriate adaptations of Shakespeare, the students will be able to fly into acting and performing on stage. Also, with a real lighting controller, we will be able to have REAL LIGHTING!
This project will make a difference because I will put the materials to work immediately in a high-needs school, working with a high-needs population that benefits directly from arts education in an urban public elementary school.
My students' lives will change because I am exposing them to high-level theater and drama. Your donation will help to open the minds of the newest young Americans, build Imagination in an era of high-stakes testing, and give the gift of art and theater!
