I teach in an inner city school in Richmond, VA. We are classified as a Title I school because of the high percentage of students who receive free or reduced lunch (86%). I teach the best and the brightest students our school has. I teach Life and Physical Science, so I lay the foundation for all of the high school sciences. Unfortunately, we do not have the necessary equipment to provide hands-on learning experiences in science - even the most basic of weighing objects. Research has shown repeatedly that students achieve higher standardized test scores as well as demonstrate a higher level of understanding when they participate in hands-on science labs. I would like to close this gap that my students face and bring my science classroom up to the current learning standards, and having the right equipment is a step in that direction. I have been developing hands-on laboratory activities that utilize the equipment I am requesting. These balances can be used as the main focus of a laboratory exercise and they can be used as a supplementary part of a scientific inquiry project. You can help my students reach across the achievement gap and contribute to their development as life long learners by enriching our classroom with your generosity.
