Instrument Island: a music experience for early childhood

My project needs 12 early childhood xylophones and related rhythm instruments for students to have individual expression, as well as a single gathering drum to promote the community aspect of learning and sharing our music.

Dear prospective donor, Your interest in this project is appreciated, and will hopefully allow us to reach our goal of a fully-funded project. I am a music teacher working at a Charter school in an urban city environment. I service approximately 400 students, once a week, in grades RK (readiness Kindergarten) through 4th. The RK students are the prospective benefactors of this project. I service two sections of readiness Kindergarten, which is made up of 12 students per class, and the average age is 4-5. Students are enrolled in this grade when various circumstances prevent them from enrolling into a traditional Kindergarten classroom. In general, many children are not quite up to the academic standards of Kindergarten, and some require social and/or emotional growth during their time in readiness Kindergarten. The children enjoy music class a great deal, and I have, in my short time of employment at this school, grown found of this age level. The obstacle is the availability of age-appropriate instruments for these younger children to use in class. The few instruments that the school owns is wonderful for the older students, but not appropriate for the 4-5 year old due to size, material design, etc. Should this project be funded, 24 students this year (and ultimately 24 new students each subsequent year) will have the opportunity for instrument playing in music class, using age-appropriate instruments. Their weekly regimen of singing, rhymes, music games and clapping patterns will be greatly supplemented with these instruments. At this age, exploration and the concept of 'play' is critical to the developing and curious mind. The amount of xylophones and rhythm instruments listed will allow for this. The notion of building a learning community and encouraging the children to share their ideas, music, and questions will be realized when seated around a large gathering drum. Your choice to fund this project will play a major role in the way my early childhood students develop their kinesthetic and musical skills, as well as their self confidence.
