Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a string orchestra teacher at a Title One school that has had great growth in the string program the past year. Mainly, because we now provide free student instruments for every student who needs one at our school. We went from 3 students to 40 last year and this school year I have another 42 4th grade students that want to learn how to play a school instrument. That is in addition to my other students! In order for my students to be successful playing violins, violas, and cellos I make them listen: to me, to recordings, to each other... An important thing that I do not have them listen to is a taped recording of themselves. A great way of developing student musicians is by having the teacher play a small section that they are working on, then the students repeat what they heard and all of this is recorded on cassette. On the play back to the class the students get to hear what they actually sounded like and then get to critique what they are doing right or wrong. With a cd player in my class I also get to broaden my students ideas on what music actually is. Bird songs, whale songs, sounds in a busy street, kids at play, you name it, it is the music of life. Of course I bring in classical music and movie soundtracks too. There is also that free trip we get to take around the world while we listen to songs from other cultures. It is amazing where music can take you, isn't it? Having a cd/cassette player in my classroom seems like such simple request but the learning that can take place using one is huge. Please help me to be able to teach the students how to critique their own playing and also widen their view of music that is around them.
