My Students

I've convinced my 14-year-olds to go to the river to count leeches, but there is NO way they are getting their only pair of tennis shoes muddy!

Every year, for the past five years, 120 inner-city kids head out to two Missouri rivers to check their water quality (suburban families - please don't wash your cars in your driveways and urban families - pick up after your dogs!).

We collect, count and report on the types of invertebrates found. We test for five different pollutants. We bring samples of water back and figure out how to clean it and then submit our findings to a state environmental agency. It's a great project! My students are typical kids out at the river, teaching each other to skip rocks, enjoying the hunt for crawdads, and always a few getting a little too wet. Some, however, don't go with us or won't venture near the water. Their excuse? Their shoes! Our student population is poor. If they wear old or dirty shoes, they are ridiculed by classmates.

My Project

Our annual trip to the rivers is a highlight of their freshman year. With wading boots and wellies, I will get more students to go with us and actively collect samples. The boots will also be used by our school's science club, which has collected over forty bags of trash from the area's riverbanks and watersheds.

Once my kids get out to the river, I begin to see them take ownership in its health and recognize that how they treat the land around the river will impact the water's quality.

More importantly to me, is seeing these young adults learn to enjoy the beauty of their natural surroundings. Thank you for considering our need.
