Why Do We Have So Many Different Organs, Miss?

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Why do we have so many different organs, Miss?" is a question I often hear. My students have memorized the functions of the organs their entire lives, but have never truly seen how they all come together.

My students work incredibly hard both inside and outside the classroom.

They are all low-income minority students. They strive to be model citizens and excel in academics, athletics, and character despite the obstacles they face. What are they working towards, you may ask? To go to and through college and live lives as happy, productive men and women.

My Project

My students need to see the inside of a human body. They've never seen all of the pieces come together to make any kind of sense. No wonder they ask why we have so many different organs. Having a model of a body in the classroom will allow them to see how each system is interconnected. Furthermore, a life-size model will teach the real-life sizes of their own organs! This model will be used in the current unit entitled, "Why do we have so many different organs?" and throughout the year. I envision multiple uses: holding the organs up during lessons to show their structure and discuss how it relates to its function, removing organs and having students investigate what's missing and how it could affect the body, and having students create their own models.

A life-size model of a human body will be something I can keep in my classroom for years and years to benefit thousands of future students.

When they go to college, my students will be a step above the rest in science class!
