"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." ~ Albert Einstein. Success in our world will be measured by how well our children learn to be contributing citizens of a global and technological world.
This success will be facilitated through the effective integration of technology into the classroom.
My students are starving for technology. I teach 6th and 7th graders in an inner city school in Virginia. They are eager learners and thirst for information, but when given the choice between working on paper or interacting with technology, technology wins every time. My children would happily spend all hours of school texting and checking Facebook if I don't give them something equally interesting with which to engage. Unfortunately, with a growing recession and falling school budgets, technology is not available to myself or my students every day. Teachers compete for the few technological resources in the school. The only people losing in this are the children.
Currently, we have one computer in my classroom. This is the computer I use for planning and online grading. Their is no students computer. We have four labs in the building and reserving one requires months of advance notice. They also are too small for the growing number of children in my classes. With an LCD and projector stand present in the classroom everyday, I will be able to engage my students daily with technology and computer activities. I will have the option to project interactive activities on to a white board to engage students. The LCD will be used in conjunction with the document camera I was able to get last year through DonorsChoose. I will also be able to use the LCD for learning stations to work on interactive activities for small groups of children. I will be able to project YouTube videos, games, virtual tours and more.
We have to ask our selves, "How are we helping children to become literate in the 21st century?" We have to make sure that our children are getting hands-on experience in the growing technological field in order for them to become productive members of society after their schooling is over.
