A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach a full-day, self-contained preschool class in a public school outside New Orleans. We are rebuilding our program since our school was destroyed in the tornadoes that followed Katrina.
Children learn by doing. If they are to learn that people of all races, ages, and abilities are all good then they need to interact with all kinds of people. If my children are going to learn that all careers are open to all, they need to see that, too.
Pretend play is the most common way young children "try out" social interactions and grown-up roles. My children find many opportunities to be firefighters, mommies, dentists, and bus drivers in the block center.
I would like to have diverse dolls to enhance dramatic play opportunities in my classroom. This grant would provide doll families (including grandparents) in five ethnicities, community helper dolls, dolls portraying differing abilities, dolls depicting various ethnic dress, and classical fairy tale characters.
When my children play with these dolls, they will "walk in their shoes" and learn to identify all kinds of people as positive.
