Future Scientists and Engineers Investigate Laws of Physics!

My students need basic data collection tools, including sensors, interface, and computer software to make the world of physics come alive in their minds.

My Students

The students that I am privileged to teach dream of becoming future engineers, inventors, and scientists in all disciplines, yet with the rusty equipment dating back to 1960s they find themselves stuck in the scientific stone age.

"How would you make dark matter in large quantities?" "What is behind the force of gravitation - idea of mass doesn't seem to explain it all??" "Can you help me with calculations to make a real telescope?" These could be the inquiries of a young imaginative mind or a mature scientific brainpower.

Yet, I am lucky to hear them everyday in an inner city physics classroom. My students, after facing unimaginable challenges of poverty, retained their inquisitive attitudes, ready to question, challenge, and explore. For most of them, it is the way of life - they have found their true passion in science. Yet, with the outdated equipment and a complete lack of budget, our school simply can not create an adequate learning environment for these brilliant minds. Attending an inner city high school should not limit students' career and educational choices, especially in case where talent and intuitive scientific thinking are so openly pronounced.

My Project

A classroom with the basic data collection tools will allow my students to learn the laws of physics firsthand - just the way they like it. They will be able to explore, analyze, and gain understanding by experimenting, instead of endlessly hearing about experiments of the lucky others. For instance, they will be able to derive motion equations by analyzing graphs they produced in a lab, instead of copying them from the book; witness the workings of Newton's 3rd law with their own critical eye. By basing their theoretical learning on personal experiences they will not lose motivation from the disconnect between the classroom notes and the world around them. Additionally, this basic equipment will begin to level the playing field. Students will have an opportunity to learn the skills comparable to those taught in better funded schools, therefore preparing them to enter college classroom with confidence.

On their graduation day, I want my students to feel that they are ready to take on the world; that they had the experiences necessary to achieve their dreams.

In a society, where individuals with scientific skills are highly needed and valued, I want my students to embrace their talents and have an opportunity to do what they truly love.
