This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I would like to see my students write programs for the raspberry pi to show them that the programs that makes their lives much easier are a result of someone bringing an idea to a finished product using computer programming.
As a teacher, I am always looking for a way to engage my lower 1/3 students.
Students sometimes get placed in our school because we are an Early College HS for Engineering and Architecture. That means that we have grants that fund a potential associates degree from our partner college.
Our students are:
Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch: 76%
Limited English Proficiency: 5%
Black or African American: 63%
Hispanic or Latino: 24%
My Project
The credit card-size Raspberry Pi microcomputer has been one of the most talked-about devices since it first hit the scene in early 2012. Originally intended to teach students about computer science, the device has sold more than 2 million units and has become a must-have for tech hobbyists.
The Raspberry Pi can be used for a variety of do-it-yourself projects. Enthusiasts have built it into a media-streaming platform, a home automation hub, or even a retro game console, among other things.
My project will make a difference because it will give the students a head start when the students take computer science courses at our partner college thus making them more successful and building their confidence that they can succeed in college despite coming from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
