A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Honestly, my days are planned, but I seem to have fires to put out everyday due to the fact that I work with at-risk students. Not always is the home life perfect or school drama at a minimum. Therefore, I have to have engaging lessons in order to distract student from the problems exist.
As an Eighth Grade Special Education Resource teacher, I am always in need for innovative extra-curricular programs at our middle school in Hollywood California.
Technology is the greatest tool to keep students engaged in and out of the classroom.
Our school is a special because it has the first ever permanent skate park and year round skate program. Students must receive permission from their teachers to participate and there is a constant focus to increase student behavior as well as academic improvement in order for students to skate.
In conjunction, students who have not yet been introduced to skateboarding will be exposed to the positive lessons this culture values: Independence, self-respect, respect for others, creativity, strong work ethic, perseverance, and achievement. With all it has to offer, it is clear that skate culture has been on the fringes of our Los Angeles community for too long. We make the effort at our school to accept and motivate skaters.
My Project
My students need 3 Flip video cameras to film student projects. We will make skateboarding movies in the first LAUSD skatepark and bully prevention movies with student driven solutions. The video cameras will be used to document the one of a kind skatepark as well as to film student movies. Our big project this year is making bully prevention movies. These movies focus on student solutions that are designed to put an end to bullying on our campus. Students are empowered to be upstanders in their films as opposed to bystanders in order to end bullying.
This project will make a difference by utilizing technology to engage at-risk students to make a difference.
Students will be motivated and willing to make changes. The movie process will be taught and will help to increase writing skills when students buy into the positive energy of making a difference through film.
