Most classes I present my notes on my PC Projector at the front of the room just like you do with a SmartBoard. However, I'm using a wireless remote mouse instead. The problem is that this tablet does not have a PC screen to show what you write so its difficult to use.
I've cobbled together this solution in lieu of an actual SmartBoard that my school cannot afford.
I use the remote mouse/tablet in combination with a wireless microphone to control my desktop PC. Everything I do wirelessly on the desktop is displayed in the front of the room so my students can take notes. I can record from anywhere in the room, but I usually do so from the back of the room. I can see everything my students are doing from the back of the room as they use PCs in class too. I save all the notes I produce with pen software as a pdf for my students to study. I also record a live video that includes my voice and every single pen stroke as I write to an mp4 file. These pdfs and mp4s are stored on my website. I do this so my students can review an old topic whenever they want. Also, this solution is great for a student who is absent from class so they don't really have to miss class and can make up work very easily and quickly! See http://www.youtube.com/calcpage2009
What I'd like to add to this mix of technology is a PC Tablet. With a PC Tablet, I can see what I write on the tablet's screen. Also, a PC Tablet will combine three devices in one. The PC Tablet is a full fledged computer in its own right, so I won't need a separate desktop. Also, the tablet has its own microphone. Last, but not least, it has its own tablet or touch screen built in, so I won't need a remote mouse/tablet anymore either! Being able to see what I write on the PC Tablet in real time will also make using this technology much easier to work with. Such a solution will also be more portable. I can simply hand off the tablet to a student if he/she has a solution to a Calculus problem to share! I very often attend mathematics education related conferences. At these conferences I speak to the use of technology in the classroom and how conducive to learning it really is. A PC Tablet will make it much easier to share these ideas!
I am trying to upgrade my classroom.
My students have always embraced new and innovative technology whenever I add something like the PC Tablet to my classroom. Teaching and learning mathematics is much more effective when using technology especially with this generation of students that grew up with such solutions surrounding them wherever they go during their entire life. Please help me improve my teaching and my students' learning by introducing this new piece of technology to my class!
