Venomous bites and gory deaths will send many reluctant middle school readers scurrying into the world of books! This collection of books about deadly animals and other killers will keep my students on the edge of their seats---and reading!
My urban middle school students, many of them English Language Learners, begin the year reading well below grade level.
A quiet period of independent reading is an important daily feature of our mixed grade Language Arts classroom. We work hard to strengthen literacy skills and prepare for high school success. Many of my most reluctant readers, particularly the boys, are attracted to any book featuring a dangerous animal or toxic attack. We are always on the lookout for books about killers in the natural world!
My Project
These high-interest books are designed to appeal to struggling and reluctant middle school readers. The collection includes books about killer bees, killer snakes, and killer lipstick! From nonfiction accounts of encounters with some of the deadliest fish in the ocean to fictional accounts of a killer tornado, there is something in this collection to appeal to every reader in my class.
Reading is a critical skill.
These appealing books will help students become stronger independent readers. Let's put this exciting collection of "killer reads" into the hands of middle school readers!
