Ahoy Mate! Student Explorers on an Overnight 1900's Voyage

My students need transportation to experience what it was like to be an Explorer in the early 1900's by spending the night on a restores sailing vessel, which is part of the National Maritime Museum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us transport our students from the streets of our urban neighborhood to the high seas of the past on the Balclutha (a restored 1890's sailing vessel). We are writing to ask for transportation funding for an incredibly exciting field trip opportunity for our fourth and fifth graders! Our School is a public charter school with 97% free and reduced lunch students. we have received FULL Scholarships for all of our students to participate in this Incredible field trip, and now all we need is the transportation to get there. This coming year we will be embarking upon a unit of study on explorers and this field trip will help our students to experience what life was like in 1906. Because of the socio-economic demographics of our students, we have received full funding for all costs of this overnight once-in-a-lifetime trip. Now we need to secure the transportation to this historic Maritime Museum in order to make it happen. This field trip serves many purposes. First, our students will learn a great deal about the explorers that came to North America in the early 1900's. Second, each of the tasks that students are asked to perform require them to act responsibly, cooperatively, and assertively in order to accomplish their goal. Finally, students will make even deeper bonds with one another and come closer together as a community as they work together to reach common goals in this once in a lifetime experience. The field trip is done through an organization that has been conducting these field trips for over twenty years. The boat is docked in shallow water that you can stand in. While on the boat, the students will learn how to exist as real sailors and explorers did back in history. They will make meals, clean the ship, work with different ropes and sailor knots, hoist sails, and work together to chart the journey as if they truly were sailors existing way back in time. The field trip is an over night trip so that the students will also get to experience what it is like to sleep in the hull of a boat just like true sailors did back in time! Each student will be a part of a team (crew) that must work together under the leadership of a chosen student and under the guide of an adult on the ship. Your donation to this proposal will allow students to create deep bonds with one another and come closer together as a community as they work together to reach common goals in this once in a lifetime experience.
