To what extent was Abraham Lincoln a great leader or a leader surrounded by great men? My Junior IB Diploma students investigate this question and present their ideas about this American President every year. However, they must use copies from my tattered version of Doris Kearns Goodwin's text "Team of Rivals."
Without the entire text, my students are prevented the ability to look for key phrases or information to help them create the ideal presentation about aspects of Lincoln's presidency. They are given the selection I copy for them... which really prevents them from the full learning experience of choosing the key ideas and presenting them in a coherent fashion which is required in historical research and analysis.
With several copies of this text each group can work together to dig deeper and further into Goodwin's account of those surrounding Lincoln during the Civil War. Having the text in hand allows students to research into more complex and varied historical interpretations of the various events Lincoln dealt with during the Civil War. Therefore, they will end up with a much better learning experience in attempting to discern whether Lincoln was a great leader or a leader surrounded by great men.
You will make it possible for my students to create better and more in depth presentations. This opportunity will let you help my students become better readers by enabling them to choose the most pertinent information from an entire text on a topic... and create a more student centered learning activity. Rather than just using what the teacher copied for them, they can guide their own learning experience by researching an entire collection of historical sources and interpretation.
