Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Art Asylum can get really messy, but the art students can get even messier than the room! I am the "keeper" of the Art Asylum where 500 kindergarten - fifth grade students spend time getting very creative. We are a public school in a very large school district where very little funds are provided to cover the costs of visual arts. My school is located in a lower socio-economic community. My students are predominately Hispanic and are bilingual. We also service about 20 autistic students who are mainstreamed for their art classes.

We had art aprons, but they were lost or stolen over the last summer vacation. Because we do so many art projects using paints, glue, clay, glazes, printing inks, and paper mache', it is vital the art students have aprons to wear so they do not ruin their school uniforms. We have had a few "mad moms" when some of the students added a splash of color to their white uniform shirts!

Because I have such a vast variety of ages, shapes, and sizes of students, we need both small/medium and large aprons so all kindergarten-fifth grade art students will be able to have an apron to fit properly. Each one of my classes has 22-24 students in them, so I need 24 aprons in each size. The aprons will definitely save a lot of school uniforms, and they will also keep many students (and me!), out of trouble with our moms! And because they are made from washable denim, they will be easy to maintain.

Your generous donation of the art aprons will ensure all art students' school uniforms will not be ruined during class in the Art Asylum. When the students wear the aprons, they will look and feel like "real artists", and the aprons will also provide the students with yet, another opportunity to learn about the responsibility and care of all art materials and supplies.
