I teach in an inner-city public charter school with limited resources and a limited budget. We have a high number of students who deal with weight problems and drive to focus on making healthier decisions. I believe that the "Walking Towards A Healthier Life" project will give students a chance to focus on exercise in a safe environment. Many overweight students are shy or embarrassed during physical education class, but everyone can walk. Learning how to use the pedometers and track their achievements in our computer lab will allow students to see their successes and learn from their failures. The project will provide a more friendly environment for students to focus on making healthier decisions in their lifestyles.
My students are not receiving the recommended physical exercise time recommended for schools. Many are facing a dangerous situation with childhood obesity. Each class currently has one 50 minute physical education class per week and a limited amount of space for exercise at recess. I believe that many behavioral issues and obesity can be linked to the inability to provide students enough exercise throughout the day.
My school needs 32 pedometers to accommodate the larger classes. We have the technology and training to incorporate and expand but have never been approved for pedometers. The "Walking Towards A Healthier Life" project will be communicated school-wide and even expand to our parents and community. I feel it creates a safe learning environment for those that fear physical activity and the harassment from others at being overweight. Everybody walks!
You can make it possible for my students to begin the necessary steps to realizing the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
