This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I'm a third grade teacher in an urban Charter School. I have been teaching third grade for five years, and next year I'm going to be teaching the lower grades. We service a lot of students who come from not so fortunate homes, so for most students coming to school is their escape from their home lives. To them school is where everything is OK and learning is fun. It sounds exciting, but it's a challenge because of the limited supplies.
A lot of my third grade students come to third grade reading at a kindergarten or first grade level. While some students are a head it is the hardest thing teaching all the different learners at the same time, without the proper supplies. How can I challenge the higher readers and teach the lower readers how to read. Books on tape are the perfect way to teach both the higher reading students and the low readers.
Research shows that children need to hear at least a thousand stories before they begin reading independently. Unfortunately a lot of my parents have more than one job and don't have time to read or do any homework with their kids. This is what is causing them to fall so behind.
The best way and the quickest way to get them back on track and learning again is not only reading to them aloud but exposing them to quality literature on tape.
Not only will the students be able to listen to and read quality literature, they can record themselves and learn from their mistakes. We could also record our own stories and make books to go with them.
I would love to have an all-inclusive listening center with books on tape, songs on Cd's, and a personal Cd/tape player with working headphones.
Your donation will help me students become more successful as readers.
