Taking the Leap:Multimedia Learning for Students with Autism

What you see is what you "get." In learning this is often true. Students need new ways of looking at increasingly difficult curriculum to make it more comprehensible to them. I teach a class of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students with high functioning autism. My students are bright, eager learners, and most are also strong visual learners. Several are identified as gifted.

In this technological era, it is important to make the move to the kind of interactive instruction that is possible with portable classroom technology. Our wonderful PTA is funding projectors and document readers for classrooms for next year. Unfortunately, we do not currently have an operational computer in our classroom.

A laptop with DVD burner in the classroom would enable my students to experience and benefit from the curriculum to the fullest. In conjunction with the PTA provided projector and document reader, we would truly have a high technology classroom. The new math curriculum adopted by the district includes interactive options that can be highlighted in a multimedia classroom. My students stand to benefit in all curriculum areas as I expand beyond the multimodal approaches I now use and create a true multimedia classroom.

As I said, what you see is what you "get," and all students want to "get it." They want to be engaged in lessons and understand the material that is presented. Your help will give my students the opportunity to take the leap into the technological classroom, a place where the sky is the limit.
